As previously reported, the BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) had agreements expiring on March 31, 2023, with the west coast longshore workers and also with the Ship & Dock Foremen at the west coast ports.

The dispute with the longshore workers was settled last year, but no agreement has yet been reached with ILWU Local 514, representing approximately 730 Ship & Dock Foremen.

As mentioned in yesterday’s bulletin, the CIRB had scheduled a case management conference this morning, Sunday, July 7, to hear complaints between BCMA and ILWU Local 514, representing the Ship & Dock Foremen.

The CIRB ruled the Local 514 strike notice is in contravention of the Canada Labour Code and has ordered Local 514 to rescind the strike notice against DP World.

The BCMEA July 7 update states as follows.

At 1:19 pm, the CIRB determined that ILWU Local 514’s declaration of strike action against DP World (Canada) Inc. is in contravention of the Canada Labour Code.

Accordingly, the CIRB directed the union to rescind the strike notice of July 5, 2024 and advise members that it is rescinded.

The BCMEA has, as a result, withdrawn its lockout notice.

FMA will keep the membership informed as new information becomes available.
