The federal regulation mandating the requirement for Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) in trucks came into effect on June 12, 2021, but enforcement of the regulation was deferred and will come into effect on January 1, 2023.

The delay in enforcement was due to several issues, including delays in approving devices. There are currently 55 devices approved and the list of approved devices can be found at the first red bar below.

Following a meeting of the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) on November 3rd, our colleagues at the Private Motor Truck Council of Canada (PMTC) produced a summary of the situation as the January 1, 2023, enforcement date approaches. This summary includes information on the status of provincial preparedness and on several exemptions that exist.
