The Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA), representing Transport Canada and the provincial Transport Departments, has announced that the ELD “soft implementation” period, with no penalties for non-compliance has be extended to January 1, 2023.

The federal Hours-of-Service Regulations were amended to require trucks operating in interprovincial or international service to be equipped with ELDs by June 12, 2021. Transport Canada subsequently announced that there would be a one-year transition period to allow time for devices to be purchased, installed, and training to be undertaken and with authorities supporting the mandate “through a period of education and awareness”, and not hard enforcement. The transition period has now been further extended to January 1, 2023.

The CCMTA bulletin extending the Transition period can be found at the red bar below.
