On October 26, Transport Canada issued a news release updating the implementation plans for electronic logging devices (ELDs). The coming-into-force date for trucks to be equipped with ELDs remains June 12, 2021.

One of the requirements of the Transport Canada regulations has been to establish a third-party organization to certify ELDs from various manufacturers. This is to ensure that only devices that meet all the regulatory requirements will be authorized for installation.

The October 26 news release announces that FPInnovations is the first third-party organization to be accredited by Transport Canada and by the Standards Council of Canada. FPInnovations will soon be announcing guidelines on the certification process for ELD providers.

The ELD requirements are included in the Transport Canada Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations.

FMA has contacted the appropriate Transport Canada officials to arrange an ELD briefing for the FMA membership for later this year. Once a date has been confirmed, we will notify the members.
