The International Maritime Organization (IMO) low-sulphur fuel requirements became effective on a global basis on January 1, 2020 after several years advance notice that this change was coming. This requirement for low sulphur fuels has been in effect for ships entering North American coastal waters since 2005.

FMA is the Canadian member of the Global Shippers Forum (GSF) and the GSF has published on January 2, 2020, a news release and “Top Ten Tips for Sulphur-surcharged Shippers”.
