How Laws are made by Parliament

March 8, 2018

While many of us may have had a “Civics” course in high school, the process for how the two Houses of Parliament (Commons and Senate) make laws is not well understood unless one is dealing with the government on a continuing basis.

As Bill C-49, the Transportation Modernization Act is going through the legislative right now, and is of interest to shippers, the following brief outline of the legislative process as published by the Senate provides a good overview.  It can be found at the following link.

For our U.S.-based members, in the Parliamentary system, the executive branch is part of the legislative branch of government and the process is somewhat different than the U.S. system where the executive is separate from the legislative branch.
